Using the controller pads
- There a four maps available
- By default Pad Map1 is loaded and is green
- You can change maps by holding down the Shift/Mute button
and pressing the pad just above Pad Map2, Pad Map3, etc... - Map 1 is Green, Map 2 is Orange, Map 3 is Yellow, and Map 4 is Red
- Each map provides a different combination of MIDI notes
- MIDI note assignments for each map can be found on page 13 of the Impact LX25+ User Guide
Drum Beats and Grooves PDF
- Several Beats and Grooves including those of Jeff Porcaro, John Bonham, Phil Collins, and Steve Gadd
Vic Firths Groove Essentials PDF
- A much more educational approach to drum beats
ASSIGNMENT
- PART 1 - This should be finished by end of class on September 24th (Level 2s skip to Part 2)
- Recreate 3 beats of all different and contrasting styles using the resources above.
- Record each instrument of the drum kit on a separate track (it is possible to use one track, but for this assignment use separate tracks). Live record each track, do not "draw" the rhythms.
- Quantize each track to clean it up a bit. Select 16th note for most straight 8th rhythms, Select 8th note triplet for swing rhythms. If you chose a more complicated beat, you may need help with this.
- Copy Project Files to... folders on your flash drive and name each MIDIBeats_LastnameF_style,
eg. MIDIBeats_ShearerM_Jazz - Submit each project folder on flash drive
- PART 2 - Due end of class Thursday, September 26th
- Create your own beat. You may use any kit or combinations of kits.
- Level 2s must use only self recorded samples and the Omni Sampler
- Your beat must meet the following criteria
- Do not use a resource, your beat should be original, though it will likely fit into a genre (County, R & B, Rock, etc...)
- You must use a minimum of 4 different sounds (Kick, Snare, Hi Hat, Cowbell, etc....)
- It must be a minimum of 2 measures (not just one measure looped!)
- If you "finish early" add more sounds to your beat, add a couple more measures, or create a new beat in a different style
- Have Mr. Shearer and/or a classmate listen to your project for originality, balance, and overall rhythm accuracy
- Copy Project Files to... a folder on your flash drive named MIDIBeats_Original_LastnameF
- Mixdown your beat to an MP3 and save as MIDIBeats_OriginalMP3_LastnameF
- Follows project submission instructions
- Meets minimum project requirements
- All beats sound like the styles you chose
- All beats are rhythmically accurate (Would it be easy to dance to?)
- Your own beat is original (creative and should be more complex than your basic style beats)
- Bonus points for especially refined and produced projects
